How much vitamin D3 do I need per day?

There are certain groups that have an increased need for vitamin D3 and may therefore require higher doses:

• Pregnant and breastfeeding women require a higher amount of vitamin D3 to meet their baby's needs. The DGE recommends a daily intake of 800 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
• Children and adolescents also need higher amounts of vitamin D3 to support their growth and bone development. The DGE recommends a daily intake of 800 to 2,000 I.U. vitamin D3 for children and adolescents up to the age of 18.
• Older people often have a higher need for vitamin D3 as they are less able to produce vitamin D from sunlight due to ageing skin and also have a lower ability to absorb vitamin D from food. The DGE recommends a daily intake of 800 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 for older people aged 65 and over.
